Understanding Taxonomy in WordPress

By Michael Fields

This is an Orange

While there are many things that can be said about this orange, I would like to turn your attention to the fact that it is FOOD.

This is the Food Pyramid

The United States Department of Agriculture has come up with a way to organize different types of food. This system is known as the food pyramid and consits of 6 individual sections which represent FOOD GROUPS. These section are Junk, Dairy, Meat, Vegetables, Fruit and Grain.

The Classification of the Orange

If we wanted to classify our orange, we could easily do so. It finds it’s home in the “Fruit” food group. The neat thing about the Food Pyramid is that it exists only for the classification of food. If you were to try to use it to classify something inedible like a monster truck or a teddy bear, it just makes no sense to do so.

Putting it into Perspective

You may be asking yourself, what does this have to do with WordPress. By using the folowing list we can easily see how this example can be translated into the scope of a WordPress site.
